Doctoral Research at GSD
The Doctoral School at the Geneva School of Diplomacy provides a structured environment for advanced research in international relations, diplomacy, and related fields. Doctoral candidates are integrated into the research community and contribute to the institution’s scholarly output from the outset of their studies.
Research Component
The doctoral programme combines coursework in research methodology with independent thesis research. Candidates develop expertise in qualitative and quantitative methods, theoretical frameworks, and academic writing. Regular research seminars provide opportunities to present work-in-progress and receive constructive feedback from faculty and peers.
Thesis Requirements
Doctoral candidates are expected to produce an original thesis that makes a significant contribution to knowledge in their chosen field. The thesis process includes:
- Proposal development and defence before a faculty committee
- Regular supervision meetings with assigned thesis advisors
- Annual progress reviews to ensure timely completion
- Public defence before an examination panel including external examiners
Research Support
Doctoral candidates receive support through access to research facilities, travel grants for fieldwork and conference attendance, methodological training workshops, and integration into relevant research labs and centres. The Research Office provides additional guidance on publication strategy and career development.
