Visas & Residence

Students studying at the Geneva School of Diplomacy must comply with Swiss visa and residence permit requirements, which vary depending on nationality and length of stay.

Visa and residence regulations are governed by Swiss federal and cantonal authorities. The School provides guidance and supporting documentation where applicable, but responsibility for compliance rests with the student.

International Geneva

Geneva is often referred to as the capital of international cooperation. The city hosts a wide range of international organisations, United Nations agencies, humanitarian institutions, and diplomatic representations.

This environment offers students daily exposure to international affairs, policy dialogue, and multicultural exchange, complementing academic study with real-world context.

Visa Requirements by Nationality

Visa requirements depend on a student’s citizenship:

  • Non-EU / non-EFTA nationals generally require a long-stay student visa before entering Switzerland.
  • EU / EFTA nationals do not require a visa to enter Switzerland but must still register for a residence permit after arrival.

Students are advised to verify specific requirements with the Swiss embassy or consulate responsible for their country of residence.

Residence Permit Registration

All students staying in Switzerland for more than three months must apply for a Swiss residence permit upon arrival, regardless of visa status.

Residence permit registration is handled by the relevant cantonal authorities and must be completed within the legally required timeframe after entering Switzerland.

Timing and Preparation

Students requiring a visa are strongly encouraged to begin the process well in advance of their intended intake.

Visa processing times may take several weeks or months. Early preparation is essential to ensure arrival in time for the start of the academic programme.

Required Documentation

Typical documentation required for visa or residence permit applications may include:

  • Official offer of admission from the Geneva School of Diplomacy
  • Valid passport
  • Proof of financial resources
  • Health insurance coverage
  • Proof of accommodation

Requirements may vary depending on nationality and individual circumstances. Students must consult official authorities for definitive guidance.

Support from GSD

Once admitted, the Geneva School of Diplomacy can provide:

  • Official admission and enrolment documents
  • General guidance on visa and residence procedures

The School cannot intervene in or influence decisions made by Swiss immigration authorities.

Living in Switzerland

Students are responsible for complying with all legal obligations related to their stay in Switzerland, including maintaining valid residence documentation throughout the duration of their studies.

Failure to comply with visa or residence regulations may affect a student’s ability to remain enrolled.

Important Notice

Visa and residence permit rules, procedures, and timelines are subject to change and are determined exclusively by official Swiss authorities. Students are responsible for ensuring that all applications are accurate, complete, and submitted on time.
